Kalypso Media has announced the closed beta for Spacebase Startopia. The game is a remake of the 2001 title Startopia by Mucky Foot. Nineteen years ago Startopia was a fun game with some issues, mainly the fact that the campaign was over very quickly and the cumbersome combat.
The remake is set for release on the 23rd of October 2020 and development is in the hands of Realmforge Studios. This Munich-based developer has spent most of the last decade on its Dungeons series. Its last foray into the world of Tycoon games was M.U.D. TV in 2010. And that game, while based on the excellent MAD TV (1991), isn’t exactly the best advertisement for their skills in the genre.
Then again, the Dungeons games get solid reviews so it would be unfair to judge Spacebase Startopia on work that was done a decade ago.
If you want to get into the beta, you have to pre-order in Kalypso’s own store. The pre-order and beta will be available on Friday, the 29th of May.
Personally I am quite curious to see how this new take on an old game holds up, expect a preview as soon as I can get into the beta.
